Memory Pillows
Now the thing with memory foam pillows is that the manufacturing process is difficult and very often unreliable. However this did not deter the company Fagerdala World Foams who decided to work with the product when NASA released memory foam to the public in the early 1980’s. In 1991 they had come up with the Tempur Pedic Swedish Mattress which eventually led to the evolution of the mattress and cushion company called Tempur World.
As memory foam became more popular so did it’s number of uses and products. It became increasingly more popular in the use for the medical sector with memory foam beds and memory pillows. Patients in hospitals who had to remain in bed for very long periods of time suffered from pressure sores or gangrene. However with memory foam mattresses and memory foam pillows incidents such as these were reduced due to the pressure on some of their bony regions being greatly reduced. Originally memory foam was far too expensive for widespread use but nowadays it is a lot more cheaper and can be found in domestic products such as mattresses, mattress toppers and memory pillows. And of course now it is widely used within the medical sector as well.

Memory pillows are made using memory foam which is polyurethane mixed with added chemicals to increase it’s density and viscosity. As well as being called memory foam it is often called visco electric polyurethane foam. Depending on the formulation memory foam can be much firmer when it is cooler or in the case with high density foam it can react to body heat moulding itself to a warm body or warm head in just a few minutes. A low density memory foam is sensitive to pressure and this too can mould itself to the shape of a human body or human head. That is why memory pillows are so good and comfortable and desired by many.
Memory foam used in memory foam pillows was first developed in 1966 by NASA’S Ames Research Centre. The reason the research centre began to work on memory foam was not for the memory pillow but to try and improve cushions and their safety in aeroplanes. The two main scientists on this project were Ames scientist Chiharu Kubokawa and Charkes Yost from the Stencil Aero Engineering Corporation. The memory foam that was sensitive to temperature was named Temper Foam by Charles Yost.
As time passed Charles Yost founded a company called Dynamic Systems Inc. which worked closely with NASA in an attempt to commercialize the memory foam down such avenues as medical equipment like x ray pads and into sports equipment such as the likes of padding for the inside of football helmets. Memory foam grew in popularity rapidly and was used in memory pillows and mattresses.
A pillow such as memory foam pillows are designed to give support and comfort to the body. Within the classification of pillow come 3 main types of pillow. These are the bed pillow, decorative pillows and finally orthopedic pillows such as the memory pillow. Bed pillows are usually square or rectangle in shape coming in three standard measurements. Standard is 20 x 26 inches, queen is 20 x 30 inches and king is 20 x 36 inches. To protect and keep clean these pillows are pillow covers. Used in many English speaking countries are the Oxford sized pillow that are 20 x 30 inches and the Continental sized pillow used in Continental Europe are 26 x 26 inches.
In the orthopedic sector of pillows such as the memory pillow, the pillows are designed to give as much comfort and protection to the sleeper as possible. Neck pillows keep the neck in alignment with the spine whilst sleeping by supporting the neck with the deep area for the head to rest. They are also known as cervical pillows. There are travel pillows which are U shaped and fit around the back of the neck to prevent the head from falling into an uncomfortable position during sleep in a sitting position. They are ideal for long plane or train journeys over night where you do not have access to a bed. Donut pillows are pillows which are very firm and shaped like a torus with a place in the middle which alleviates pressure on the tailbone area whilst sitting down. These are generally used by people who have injured the tailbone or the tailbone area or by people who suffer from haemorrhoids or any other ailment of the colon. And then finally there are lumbar pillows which support the inward curve of the lower back. These are ideal for driving or using in the office chair if you sit for many hours in the office.
There are of course decorative pillows as well, but they are pretty well self explanatory and are not so relevant to the web site here on memory foam pillows, so we will just concentrate on memory pillows.
Memory pillows are designed and manufactured to give you a great comfortable nights sleep. They absorb head pressure and head heat to then mold itself perfectly around your head and neck giving the necessary support and keeping the neck in alignment with the spine. The reason memory pillows are so sought after is the fact that they fully conform to the contours of your head and neck. Because these memory foam pillows are temperature sensitive, the memory foam folds and has customized shaping. The memory foam actually works so well because of the way in which the cells operate. These memory foam cells compress fully and spread their air pressure to their neighbouring cells and so on. This results in the reduction of pressure points whilst moulding to the shape of the body. These memory foam pillows have a contoured shape that cradles both the neck and head giving a remarkable support. They are made from high density foam that is also a slow recovery foam so basically caters for the head and neck throughout the whole sleep. Memory foam pillows are just one type of many pillows available to the consumer. A pillow is just generally a large cushion support for the head mainly used for sleeping or in a bed or used to support and give comfort to the body on a sofa or in a chair. Originally going back in time pillows were only used mainly by the wealthy and early examples have been found in tombs in Ancient Egypt. In China and Persia pillows became prized commodities the more highly decorated they were. This was due to the fact that it was very difficult to use high sophisticated dyes and new sewing techniques. With all these new difficult techniques making pillows became an art form and hence cost very much. It was not until the Industrial Revolution that pillows and other decorated textiles were mass produced. And just bear this in mind when you use your comfortable modern day memory foam pillows, that in China the traditional pillows were hard boxes made from wood, stone, metal or porcelain instead of stuffed fabric! Nothing like the memory pillows of today!

Memory pillows are not the only form of sleeping assistance that uses memory foam. Maybe you have been suffering from sleepless nights due to body ailments and have sought advice where the memory pillow has been recommended to you. The pillow is a good place to begin to see if there are any improvements in your problems. Memory foam pillows are not too expensive so if they do not help for some reason or other then the cost will not pain you any further. But if as is expected you have improvements from using the pillow you could go the whole way and get yourself a memory foam mattress. It is a bigger investment to make and that is why it is perhaps best to road test a memory pillow first.
Memory Foam Mattress
So if you have decided that would like to get yourself a memory foam mattress come bed then you should go around the bed shops and check a few out. The good thing about bed shops is that they have all their items set up and on display for you to look at and try out. When you first try out a bed with a memory foam mattress you will immediately notice that it has a unique feel about it. You will experience the mattress moulding to your body shape and enveloping you whilst giving a firm support feeling under you. This is a completely different feel to that of a traditional spring mattress where it feels like you are sinking and the support under you is not so strong.
So basically as soon as you have tried a memory foam mattress you will realize there is something different happening and it’s good. But you will already know that if you have been using memory foam pillows.
The memory foam mattress is made from polyurethane foam and consists of 2 main sections. The top section of the mattress which comes into contact with your body is made from memory foam that will sense the pressure and contours of your body and adjust accordingly.. The second section under the memory foam consists of a layer of high density foam and the chief role of this is structural support. The bottom of the memory foam mattress is lined with a non slip material which reduces any movement when installed. And of course there are ventilated bottoms which give the mattress superb air circulation for optimal temperature. The mattress has been designed and manufactured to give pressure sensing, body conforming characteristics and excellent overall support.

This mattress is guaranteed to feel and perform the same or you will get your money back. As with memory foam this mattress senses your body and temperature and gentle conforms itself around you to give relief to pressure points and reduce any tossing and turning. The base of the mattress is 7 inch high resilience polyurethane that supports the 5.3 pounds of memory foam superbly. The base foam also consists of 2 layers of convoluted base foam which helps to add more comfort and responsiveness to the mattress. We like this mattress very much and is an ideal partner for your memory pillows.
The difference between a memory foam mattress and a traditional spring mattress is that the traditional mattress relies upon a finite number of springs to support your body whilst you sleep. The problem with this though is that these limited number of springs can only adjust to your sleeping body in an approximate way. There will be pockets of space between your body and the traditional mattress which is not properly supported. The advantage of the memory foam mattress over this is that memory foam is visco elastic and hence acts just as if it has an infinite number of springs. The result thus is that of complete support without any pockets of space. The memory foam mattress wins hand down in any comparison with a traditional spring mattress for support especially when combined with any of the memory foam pillows available.
So the benefits of a memory foam mattress are that it will mould to your body perfectly and hence you can view your mattress as one that is custom made just for you. Your whole body is supported more than adequately and the memory characteristics of the foam help reduce any extraneous movements. If you are sharing your bed with your partner the visco elasticity properties of the foam will reduce and almost eliminate any unwanted movements or bounce that are made from movements from your partner.
If you do decide to buy yourself a memory foam mattress you should pay particular attention to the thickness of the memory foam. You should be looking for a thickness of no less than 3 inches. There are mattresses available that are thinner than this but they are just simply too thin and usually bottom out and give inadequate support. The 3 inch or above in thickness will ensure you receive optimal support during the lifetime of the product. The density of the foam is also another important factor. The density is measured in pounds and cubic feet. and you should ideally be looking for foam with a density of no less than 5 pounds. These mattresses may be heavier but they have a longer lifetime and give you optimal firmness. Anything under 5 pounds usually will feel too soft in our opinion.
Once bought make sure your memory mattress has all the proper packaging. Packaging and delivery of the mattress is all important. Try to find one that has been vacuum packed and rolled rather than been folded. Rolling in packing is better for the mattress as it uses gradual bending and minimizes any sharp folds in the mattress. Also when vacuum packed the mattress is well protected from any debris or chemical odours because the residual air is pushed out of the packaging.
So if you do suffer from sleepless nights or have problems sleeping due to body pains then by all means try all means and methods to find a solution but we here believe that the solution to all your problems could be solved with a memory foam mattress combined together with memory pillows.

Sleep
Memory pillows are designed and manufactured to aid you in sleep but what actually is sleep. Sleep is a naturally recurring state of suspended sensory activity. Sleep is essential for survival in humans, other mammals and the majority of animals. Sleep is the subject of intense research yet despite this the purposes and mechanisms of sleep are only partially clear.
Sleep is divided into 2 types in birds and mammals. These are rapid eye movement
(REM) and non rapid eye movement (NREM). Both types have their own associated physiological,
neurological and psychological characteristics. NREM has also been sub divided into
three stages N1, N2 and N3 by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sleep goes
in cycles of REM and NREM with a typical cycle being that of N1-
It was Alfred Lee Loomis in 1937 who distinguished the different electroencephalography features of sleep into 5 different levels which covered the whole sleep from deep sleep to waking up. In 1953 REM sleep was found to be distinct and that was when William Dement and Nathaniel Kleitman classified sleep into 4 NREM stages and REM.
When researching sleep and other characteristics of sleep a specialized sleeping laboratory is required and a polysomnography used. Measurements are taken of the brain waves which are called EEG, the eye movements EOG and finally measurements of the skeletal muscle movements EMG. On average in a human the sleep cycle lasts from 90 minutes to 110 minutes.
NREM sleep
There are believed to be 3 stages of NREM. These are N1, N2 and N3.
N1 is somnolence or drowsy sleep. Here sudden jerks are associated with the onset of sleep. Some of us may also experience hallucinations during this stage. The technical jargon referred to this stage is when the brain has the transition from alpha waves to theta waves and we lose some muscle tone and most conscious awareness.
N2 is where conscious awareness of the external environment completely disappears and muscle activity decreases greatly. N2 takes up about 50% of total sleep in the majority of adults.
N3 is the deep sleep. Nightmares, bedwetting, sleep talking and sleep walking can take place in this stage.
REM sleep
Rapid eye movement sleep accounts for about a quarter of sleep time in the full grown adult. It is distinguished by rapid eye movements and rapid low voltage EEQ. It is the stage of sleep where we have our most memorable dreams and in most mammals it is where a descending muscular atonia is witnessed. Why this is, is not 100% clear but it is believed to be because the paralysis of the muscles protects from self damage. When dreaming we could physically act out the dreams during REM. But because of the muscle paralysis we cannot. That is one of the most substantial theories.
Sleep Timing
Inside us all we have a circadian clock and it is this clock that controls our sleep timing. It is an inner timekeeping, temperature fluctuating enzyme controlling device that works together with adenosine. This adenosine is a neurotransmitter that inhibits many of the body processes linked with being awake. Throughout the day adenosine is created and when we have high levels of this we become sleepy.
Optimal sleeping time
This is hard to decide as all humans are different and have different circadian rhythms but a person should have at least 6 hours of sleep before their body reaches the lowest body temperature. The correct timing is right when maximum concentration of the hormone melatonin and the minimum core body temperature meet in the middle of the sleep and just before waking up. Of course sleeping varies by individuals and age but sleep is considered to be adequate when there is no sleep during the daytime or any dysfunction during the sleep.
Research is full going into sleep and researchers at Warwick university have found that a lack of sleep can more than double the risk of death. Also a lack of sleep can be linked to weight gain, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. This is quite concerning actually and if you are having problems sleeping due to body positions or such then you really should take a good look at memory pillows to help you here. But before you start to worry yourself too much there are not yet any findings that link long sleep to increased mortality. But it has been found that sleeping for about 7 hours every night is ideal for optimal health and memory foam pillows will help you achieve this.
Causes of difficulty in sleeping
Many things can be the cause of poor sleeping. If you follow the sleep hygienic principals these may solve many problems of physical or emotional discomfort. But if the reason for lack of sleep is pain, illness, drugs or stress then any of these problems must be looked at and any steps possible that can be taken should indeed be done so. There are many solutions out there its just a matter of finding the correct solution. If it is body pain that is preventing you from having a good nights sleep there are various patents, products and sleep techniques that exist to help you overcome this problem. These range from methods of actually sleeping on the floor instead of in the bed, to products which will even lift blankets of people’s feet whilst they sleep. There is also memory foam which is used in memory foam pillows and mattresses which create a surface for you that is customized to you body shape and position. One thing for sure though is that we all need sleep. Without it we run the risk of illness and many other ailments as well as not being able to function properly. So if you are having sleeping problems you must confront the problem, take it on and beat it. They may not be a miracle cure but they surely could help you so you must at some time take a look at memory pillows.
Back pain
Memory pillows help you have a good nights sleep by forcing you to sleep in the correct position and having the right posture for your body. Many people find it hard to sleep because they suffer from back pain or similar ailments and because of these they are unable to relax properly or stay in one position for a great deal of time. So they move around and toss and turn to gain some relief from the pain in another position. All of these prevents a good nights sleep and if you have a partner who shares your bed it can be very disturbing for them as well.
Back pain also known as dorsalgia is pain that a person feels in the back that more often than not originates from the bones, joints, nerves, muscles or some other structures in the spine. The pain can be located and is then referred to as either neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain. The pain can be constant or come now and then and can stay just in one place or move around to other areas.
This pain could be a dull ache or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. But whichever type it is there is no doubt about it in that it is most unpleasant and those of us who suffer from it wish to find a cure as soon as possible.
In America low back pain is the fifth most common reason for people to go and visit the doctor and its estimated that nine out of ten adults experience some form of back pain at some time in their life. And even more alarming is the estimation that five out of ten working adults suffer from back pain every year. The main part of the back is the spine and this is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, tendons and ligaments all of which are well capable of producing and inflicting pain within us.
There are several potential sources and causes of back pain. One such potential source is that of the skeletal muscle of the back. Muscle strains, muscle spasms and muscle imbalances can all potentially cause pain in muscle tissues but studies done in the medical profession with imaging studies do not support the notion of muscle tissue damage in many of the back pain cases they looked in to. It must also be said as well that there is not a great understanding of muscle spasms and muscle imbalances within the medical institutes.
The synovial joints of the spine are another potential source of back pain in the lower back These particular joints have identified as the source of pain in about one in three people who suffer from or with chronic low back pain. These joints are also found to be the cause of pain in most neck pain cases caused by whiplash. Other sources of back pain can be that of spinal disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis as well as trauma, cancer, infection, fractures and inflammatory disease. Sciatica is diagnosed without invasive diagnostic tests and is distinguished from non specific back pain. As you can see from reading this the numbers of causes of back pain keeps increasing and just shows that we all are susceptible to some form of back pain. Now do you remember your school days or sitting at the dinner table with your parents ? How many times were you told by your teachers or parents to sit up straight and take care of your posture. Many many times I must confess in my case and what good advice it actually was. Keeping the correct posture by sitting correctly will not guarantee you a life free of back pain but it certainly will help you towards that goal. Back pain is very unpleasant and if can be avoided then we would all run as far away as possible from it. So sitting correctly can help you as can sleeping in the correct posture with memory foam pillows. On average we spend a third of our life in bed which is a lot of hours in the lying down position. So the correct posture and position in bed is vital in your attempt to keep your back free from pain. This is where memory pillows really distinguish themselves. Memory pillows force us to sleep in the correct position for our bodies. They are not expensive to buy and to be honest why would you not have one ?
When you suffer from back pain and go for treatment the aim is to reduce or completely get rid of the pain as quickly as possible. Back pain stops us functioning properly in every day activities and if it is not taken aware then we are constantly reminded of every minute of the day and suffer. The thing with back pain though is that it is individual and one treatment for one person may not have the same effects on another person. So most people find that they have to go through several different treatment options to find the right one for them. Surgery is always the last option but for some it is the quickest and only way to achieve pain relief.
There are a few short term relief’s such as heat therapy. Heat therapy can reduce the symptoms of acute and sub acute low back pain. Some of the patients who opt for this treatment find that moist heat actually works best such as taking a hot bath or having a warm wrap around the painful area. There are medicines that can be taken as well for short term relief such as muscle relaxants, opoids or paracetamol. These do give short term relief but do not get to the source of the problem and make it good. Massage too from a professional therapist can give short term relief as well. Acupressure or pressure point massage may be more beneficial than classic massage.
Exercise can be effective in the reduction of pain and needs to be done under the supervision of a licensed health professional. Some form of stretching and exercise is usually an essential part of most back treatment programs, but try to stay away from lifting big weights. There is one study that found that exercise is good for chronic back pain but not for acute pain.
Physical therapy which includes manipulation and exercise such as stretching have shown great results in the treatment of back pain. Manipulation by trained and qualified chiropractors, osteopaths and physiatrists also have shown good results. And then there is acupuncture which has be proven to help with back pain.
So back pain can be a huge problem and extremely uncomfortable to say the least. It is something that should not be ignored and you should immediately set yourself the task of getting right down to the problem and dealing with it. Take advice and as many treatment options that are available until you find the solution. If you have to resort to surgery then so be it. Take care of your back properly if you get cured by keeping the correct posture as often as possible and if you do have problems sleeping because of back pain then invent in one of the many memory pillows out there. Lack of sleep combined with back pain is not an avenue one should go down. Take treatment and change your sleeping habits. Invest wisely in a memory foam mattress and always combine this mattress with memory pillows and memory foam pillows.
